Intelligent Engineering’s SPS Terraces are prefabricated terracing or riser units, as used recently at the O2 Dublin in Ireland, and Ascot Racecourse Grandstand and Birmingham’s LG Arena in the UK, to create raked seating and standing platforms. They are manufactured from steel and a sandwich plate system (SPS) in a range of tread widths, rise heights and long clear spans for both stadia and arenas.
The company says SPS Terraces meet international stadia and building standards for structural strength and safety, audience comfort and seating unit support. They are delivered to site fully finished and are installed using conventional steel erection practices. SPS Terraces are certified by the UK’s Building Research Establishment (BRE), listed by Underwriters Laboratories, and code-prescribed under New York City Construction Codes.
Intelligent Engineering says SPS Terraces weigh one quarter of comparable concrete terraces, and can be supported by lighter frames, cores and foundations. SPS Terraces are erected quickly and easily, helping to reduce site complexity and shorten construction programmes. Using SPS Terraces can also reduce structural and construction costs, and allow venues to open earlier.
The sandwich plate system is a composite material comprising two metal plates bonded with a polyurethane elastomer core. SPS delivers a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it an excellent alternative to both reinforced concrete and stiffened steel. SPS was developed by Intelligent Engineering and has been used in over 170 projects, including ships, bridges, buildings, and stadia.
