UC Berkley unveils new Memorial Stadium

A newly refurbished and retrofitted stadium at the University of California, Berkley is now open. The new Memorial Stadium features a plethora of improvements including seismic reinforcements, improved amenities and 365 restrooms. Some 100,000 ft2 of new turf has been installed, while the field has been lowered by 4ft to improve sight lines for fans in the front rows. The old wooden bleachers have been replaced with aluminium ones and a new sound system, specifically designed for the Memorial Stadium, has been installed. The venue now also boasts three new club levels and an expansive press box.

It took construction crews just 640 days to transform the 89-year-old arena, which was mainly used for Saturday home football games, into a modern, state-of-the-art facility fit to host multiple functions and events throughout the week, all year-round.

The US$321 million renovation was accomplished both without the use of public funds, and without altering the structure’s neo-Roman façade, which is an important reminder of the stadium’s origins as a memorial to UC Berkeley community members who died in WWI.

“The project is the result of literally thousands – and in the case of our generous donors, tens of thousands – of passionate Cal faithfuls who believed in the need for facilities that would provide our student athletes with the conditions for success, and who believed in the need for a stadium that would provide a safe, secure venue for our community to gather,” says UC Berkley athletic director Sandy Barbour. “We’ve gone from having arguably the worst facilities in Division I to certainly among the best.”

Brazil's Morumbi stadium is undergoing an extensive modernisation project that will increase the venue's flexibility, improve safety and increase spectator comfort.
