AZ Alkmaar’s stadium roof collapses

Dutch soccer side AZ Alkmaar suffered a shock after a large section of canopy roofing collapsed at its AFAS Stadium during recent high winds.

Pictures of the Eredivisie club’s stadium, which is 25 miles from Amsterdam and opened in 2006, shows the roofing section of around 20 meters in width lying in pieces over seating. Thankfully the club was not playing at the time of the collapse and no supporters were in attendance, so nobody was harmed during the incident.

An investigation will be conducted as to why the roof suffered as a result of the weather and whether the 17,023-seater stadium is safe enough to host AZ Alkmaar matches this season.

“This surprised us all. We are very shocked but especially happy that there was no human suffering,” said Robert Eenhoorn, AZ Alkmaar general manager, said at a press conference.

“In the coming days we will conduct a study with experts in this field. Only when that investigation has been done can we elaborate on the matter. It is much too early for that now. No matches will be played in the stadium if the situation is not safe. As soon as more is clear about our upcoming duels, we will report that as soon as possible.”
