IAAF World Championships

At the IAAF 2019 World Championships, which will be held at the Khalifa Stadium in Doha on 27 September, athletes will be competing on one of the world’s most technologically-advanced track surfaces.

One of the most notable features of the track, which is called the Mondotrack WS, is that it will be the first time ever, a top global athletic competition will take place on a red and pink track, which has been specified to fit in with the Championships’ branding.

The company behind the surface, Mondo, has shared a video of the installation, and here are 10 other facts about it:

The main track surface is 95,540ft2 (8,876m2)

In total, 244 tons of rubber was used in its construction

1.2m wide x 15m long rolls of material weighing 200kg each were sent from Italy, where it was manufactured by Mondo, to Doha

The track was delivered to the Khalifa International Stadium in 681 rolls in January 2018

The average daily temperature during the installation period was 30oC (86 oF)

Two professional installers, helped by a crew of 4 local installers, installed the track in 40 days.

During the Championships the main track will be air conditioned

The same surface technology will be used for the official track at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

Mondotrack WS is Greenguard Gold certified for its low VOC emissions, which contributes to minimizing the stadium’s ecological footprint

A warmup track was also installed in summer 2019, with a total surface area of 79,588ft2 (7,394m2) and was installed in 30 days.
