The NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers join a growing list of teams who are offering next-generation augmented reality experiences for visiting fans.

Using a dedicated new app created by YinzCam, visitors to Heinz Field will be able to take advantage of interactive experiences and view content on their mobile phones that is overlaid on the real-life image they are looking at.

The Steelers have used the technology to bring the Terrible Towel Wall feature to life at Heinz Field, where fans can see videos and galleries by pointing their phone at the attraction.

“We have designed the app with our fans in mind,” said Reagan Berube, Pittsburgh Steelers director of content. “We’ve based a lot of the functionality and design on analytics in an effort to make the most popular features and content easy to access.

“Also, developing the app as a ‘companion’ for special events like game days has been a focus for us. Fans attending games at Heinz Field should get a different experience than those watching from home, and we’ve created unique features and pathways to those features.”

Teams are constantly exploring new avenues for fan experiences, and augmented reality is a growing area that is able to offer richer, tailor-made content with the benefit of being interactive.

A statement from the Steelers reveals that they will continue to develop the mobile app and will likely feature additional AR technology in the near future.
