Less than three years after staging its first game on brand new turf, US Bank Stadium is already planning to replace its artificial field.

According to reports, the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority is seeking bids from contractors for the installation of the new playing surface before the 2019-2020 season kicks off for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

It is estimated that artificial turf lasts up to 10 years before it needs replacing; however, the Vikings are “determined we are approaching the time where the turf needs replacing” and are seeking to swap out the current turf, which cost an estimated US1.5m.

“The periodic replacement of the artificial playing surface is part of the overall capital improvement plan for US Bank Stadium and is typical for stadia over time. This is to ensure the stadium remains safe and in top condition for all athletes,” MSFA’s stadium management company, SMG, said in a statement.

It is reported the new turf could feature removable panels for the potential hosting of baseball games, as well as being able to expand for soccer matches. The cost of the new turf is not yet known; however, under the terms of the bid request it would have to come with a five-year repair and replacement warranty.
