Champions League 2019 final to be held at Estadio Metropolitano

UEFA’s executive committee has announced that Estadio Metropolitano, the new home of Spanish soccer club Atlético Madrid, will host the Champions League final in 2019.

The UEFA body also announced venues for the Women’s Champions League final (Ferencváros Stadium in Budapest, Hungary), the Europa League (Olympic Stadium, Baku, Azerbaijan) and the Super Cup (Beşiktaş Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey).

In addition, a memorandum of understanding with the Association of European Professional Football League (EPFL) was approved. Following the amendments to the UEFA statutes approved by the UEFA Congress, the EPFL will nominate a representative to sit on the UEFA executive committee.

“I am pleased that today we have taken an important step by including the European Professional Football Leagues in our decision-making processes,” commented UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin. “They are an important stakeholder in European Football and I am looking forward to working closer with them in the future.”

The committee also received an update on the situation regarding the Eurostadium in Brussels, Belgium, one of the venues for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, and requested that all relevant permits to start construction, as well as a realistic and guaranteed construction schedule, be obtained by November 20, 2017.

In addition, the committee asked the UEFA administration to start, in parallel, a fast-track process to develop a replacement option. The replacement options are Stockholm, Sweden, and Cardiff, Wales, both candidates from the original bidding process for the finals. Wembley Stadium in London, UK, is also a replacement option, as it is the only current host stadium with availability to stage all the matches that should be played in Brussels). The committee will make a final decision on this matter in December.
