The opening ceremony for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be held at Maracanã Stadium on August 5, with the thousands of expected attendees gathering under a Sheerfill roof. Manufactured by Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, Sheerfill architectural membrane roofs will also adorn Mineirão, Fonte Nova Arena and Brasilia’s National Stadium, Mané Garrincha Stadium. The venues will all play host to the soccer event at the Games.

The long, column-free spans of the stadia are made possible by the use of Sheerfill, ensuring impressive sightlines from multiple perspectives and providing protection from the elements. The translucent nature of the material allows diffuse daylight to fill the space below, enhancing fans’ comfort and experience.

For stadium owners and operators, Sheerfill membranes have proven to be a great investment, providing up to 30 years or more of reliable service with little maintenance. Additionally, the safety of guests and employees is improved because of the permanent non-combustible nature of Sheerfill membranes.

The four Olympic stadia were built or refurbished for the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

“Four years ago, The O2 dome and arena was central to the Olympics in London in the UK. The 02’s dome roof is made with Sheerfill membrane. While recognition of the Sheerfill brand is limited mostly to those in the architectural and design communities, the fact that it is part of so many recognizable structures, one can see that Sheerfill is the name behind the landmarks, including the iconic Maracanã Stadium,” said Michael Lussier, global market leader, Sheerfill architectural membrane.
