Melbourne Cricket Ground reveals details of connectivity overhaul

Fans visiting the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the 2016 AFL season will be able to enjoy world-class connectivity, as Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) has unveiled a new high-density, free wi-fi network, along with improved 3G and 4G coverage.

The iconic Australian stadium’s new network enables fans to access real-time and interactive content, use apps, and check in on social media, without using their personal mobile data plans.

“We are delighted to be able to offer an improved MCG experience for the 2016 AFL season, with visitors able to stay connected wherever they are in the stadium,” said MCG CEO Stephen Gough.

More than 141 miles of cable have been installed at the stadium, enabling wireless connectivity throughout the venue.

“This project has involved significant investment by the MCC,” added Gough. “We have worked closely with our partners – including Cockram Construction, IBM and Cisco – to find the most appropriate and long-term technology solutions for the MCG and our patrons.”

Mobile device use within the ground has been improved thanks to a Telstra-led installation of the largest distributed antenna system of its kind – improving 3G and 4G service within the stadium.

“The design, collaboration and construction of core infrastructure has taken over two years and required an extraordinary amount of technology needed to connect up to 100,000 fans,” said Mike Wright, managing director of Telstra Group, networks.

“Fan expectations are greater than ever,” added Cisco Systems director Jonathan Dixon, “mandating a more connected sporting venue that enables fans to share and consume relevant content and services, while engaging with more people from any device, anywhere in the stadium.”
