Real Madrid has shared plans for the remodeling of its legendary Santiago Bernabéu stadium, which club president Florentino Pérez says will become “an avant-garde and universal icon”.
Explaining the transformation, Pérez said, “Our future naturally involves a new Santiago Bernabéu stadium, a modern, avant-garde stadium, with maximum comfort and safety, with state-of-the-art technology, where fans can experience unique sensations and also be a new and important source of income for the club.”
He added, “This great project will become a key piece for the Real Madrid of the future, but also for the city of Madrid. The new Santiago Bernabéu stadium, located in the heart of Madrid, will be the best stadium in the world. More modern, more comfortable, safer and designed for entertainment, with new areas of leisure and catering and where the most advanced technology will be key for fans to live new experiences.”
The renovation of Santiago Bernabéu and the surrounding area will begin with the development of a 20,000m2 (215,280ft2) plaza at La Castellana, one of the city’s main avenues, and another, of 5,000m2 (53,820ft2) nearby at the Padre Damián corner. Rafael Salgado Street will be pedestrianized.
Pérez said that Real Madrid wants to be “the great digital stadium of the future”. To this end, the club is to install a 360° video scoreboard that is expected to become emblematic of the new Santiago Bernabéu.
The new stadium, Pérez also revealed, will have a skin of steel bands and variable lines that will enable the illumination and projection of images, and a fixed and retractable roof over the playing field.
