Plans for a new Memorial Stadium at Seattle Center took a major step forward this week, as the Seattle Council’s Parks Committee unanimously approved the proposal for demolition and reconstruction.
The committee’s decision, long anticipated after years of planning and financial commitments from the Seattle School District, city and state officials, and philanthropic donors, paves the way for the project’s next phase.
A final vote to formalize the agreement is scheduled for June 3 at the full Seattle City Council meeting, followed by a vote from the Seattle School Board on June 4.
According to city documents, groundbreaking is slated for June 26, with the new stadium expected to open in September 2027.
Council committee chair Joy Hollingsworth called the vote “positive news” for the city, noting it marks progress after years of deliberation over the best use of the Seattle Center site—a historic venue that has hosted the World’s Fair, major concerts, and countless sporting events over the decades.
