After recent revelations that Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium might not be ready until 2019, things might be looking more optimistic for the London soccer club after it shared images of its turf being installed at the new venue.
Marking what the club is calling a “historic moment” Spurs fans will no doubt be delighted at the sight of the arrival of the new pitch, with every construction milestone moving the stadium closer to completion.
Rolls of hybrid turf, which is reinforced by polypropylene strands, were prepared in the Netherlands and delivered to the stadium in 23 refrigerated trucks over the course of three days. After eight weeks of groundwork by the club’s groundstaff to ensure the optimum conditions for installation, specially designed machines lifted and laid the rolls, accommodating the 1.6 ton weight of each strip.
Each strip is 2.4m (7.8ft) wide and 12m (39ft) long and will take an estimated four weeks to be fully settled. The turf pitch is one of the stadium’s technological focal points with it being part of a retractable system that slides out of the way to reveal an artificial playing surface underneath, which will be able to host NFL matches.
Tottenham Hotspur FC has still not indicated when the club intends to host its first soccer fixture at the new stadium and will continue to play home games at Wembley Stadium.
