BC Place looking for naming rights partner

The iconic BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, could take on a new name before too long after it was revealed its owners are seeking a private naming rights deal.

The 54,500-seater multipurpose stadium, which opened in 1983, is home to a number of sporting teams, including the MLS Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian Football League’s BC Lions and Canada Sevens rugby.

Owned and operated by the BC Pavilion Corporation, it has been given permission from the British Columbia provincial government to seek a partner to place a new name over the door.

It is understood that the process will begin on February 19, 2019, with a shortlist of naming candidates announced by June and a winner unveiled in July. However, no companies that promote alcohol or “other addictive substances” are permitted to apply according to guidelines for publically-owned facilities.

The revenue generated from the naming rights deal is said to go toward the operational costs and improvements at BC Place.

“This naming-rights sponsorship opportunity will make more funds available for government to improve the services that British Columbians count on,” said BC tourism minister Lisa Beare.

“We believe this is an excellent time to look for the right corporate partner for this important facility in BC, and through that sponsorship, generate significant benefit for British Columbians.”
