On fall Saturdays in Champaign, Illinois, tradition runs deep. From the first notes of the marching band to the roar that follows a big defensive stop, Gies Memorial Stadium has long been defined by moments shared between the field and the stands. In 2026, those moments will be experienced on a scale college football has never seen.
The University of Illinois has partnered with Daktronics to install the largest video display in college football, transforming the south end zone into a visual centerpiece that redefines the game-day experience.
Measuring approximately 69 feet high by 250 feet wide, the new main display spans more than 17,300 square feet, making it the biggest of its kind at the collegiate level. In fact, the display is roughly 62% larger than any other college football scoreboard, a gap that underscores just how significant the upgrade is for the Fighting Illini program.
Built for bigger moments
The massive display features 10‑millimeter pixel spacing designed to deliver crisp imagery, strong contrast and clarity for in-bowl viewers. From live video and instant replays to graphics, animations and real‑time statistics, the screen is built to support the full range of modern game presentation while remaining legible from every seat.
With 16 million pixels, this display would rank as the fifth‑largest display in professional football, putting it in the same size class as some of the most iconic screens in major league venues. For perspective, it’s roughly the same size as the main outfield display at Citi Field in New York and more than three times larger than the main video display at Soldier Field in Chicago.
More than one screen
While the south end zone display commands attention, it’s only part of a broader stadium‑wide upgrade. The project includes 16 LED displays throughout Gies Memorial Stadium, combining for more than 26,750 square feet of digital real estate and roughly 30 million total pixels.
That footprint includes a super ribbon in the north end zone, two extended sideline ribbon displays, multiple field‑level displays and additional bleacher screens. Together, the system is designed to keep fans connected to the action no matter where they are seated, while giving Illini Athletics new flexibility in storytelling, sponsor integration and crowd engagement.
What it means for the program
For Illini Athletics, the display is both a technological investment and a statement about the program’s trajectory.
The project is scheduled for completion ahead of the 2026 college football season, aligning with continued momentum under head coach Bret Bielema and a fan base that has increasingly filled the historic venue to near capacity.
From Daktronics’ perspective, the installation reflects the growing scale of college football presentation and the expectations that come with it.
By combining unprecedented size with high‑resolution performance, the new video display is designed to make every touchdown, replay and celebration feel larger than life, all while reinforcing Gies Memorial Stadium’s place among college football’s most recognizable venues.
