Global architecture firm Populous, in collaboration with Lisbon-based Saraiva + Associados, has unveiled a transformative new master plan for Portuguese footballing giant Benfica, as outlined in this short video by architecture specialists Dezeen.
The redevelopment will modernise the iconic stadium and introduce an integrated mix of public and mixed-use facilities, repositioning the site as a dynamic, year-round destination.
Originally designed by Populous and opened in 2004, Estádio da Luz is now set to evolve into the heart of a vibrant, venue-led urban district. The new master plan is part of a broader trend in stadium-driven regeneration, drawing comparisons with developments such as Wembley Stadium and the Etihad Campus. The design carefully responds to the existing context of the stadium while enabling future expansion and fostering deeper public engagement.
In alignment with forthcoming international sporting events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the project is expected to reach completion in the coming years.
The redevelopment supports Benfica’s long-term financial sustainability and its commitment to community-focused initiatives. The expansive plan introduces a wide array of amenities designed for both matchday and everyday use, including a new 10,000-seat indoor arena, two indoor sports halls (2,500 and 1,500 seats), a community swimming pool, rooftop football pitch with integrated running track and a 500-seat theatre and events space
These facilities aim to enhance the club’s infrastructure while serving the broader Lisbon community.
