On 7 June 2024, Bogotá’s city hall signed a concession contract for a 2.4 billion Peso (US$604 million) PPP to build and operate the new El Campin Cultural and Sports Complex. The project was awarded last December to the consortium Asociación Público Privada Complejo Cultural y Deportivo El Campín (CDEC).

As part of the project, the Nemesio Camacho El Campin Stadium, Colombia’s most prominent stadium, will undergo an extensive renovation. The 85-year-old multipurpose stadium situated in the heart of Bogota, is home to two of Colombia’s top soccer teams, Independiente Santa Fe and Millonarios. It also hosts music concerts by world-class artists. The aim of the renovation is to transform the stadium and surrounding area into a new entertainment, sports, cultural and tourist centre.

The new stadium at the new El Campin Cultural and Sports Complex will have a capacity of more than 46,000 spectators and will comply with FIFA and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) standards. The stadium will feature many modern and high-tech features, including a retractable roof, boxes and VIP experience areas, restaurants, expanded stands, spaces for people with reduced mobility, locker rooms dedicated to local teams and additional dressing rooms for visitors.

The entire complex will cover an area of 167,000m2 and will encompass diverse areas including entertainment, commercial, offices, a hotel, creative areas, an exhibition hall and restaurants, as well as sports areas, a gym and an emergency healthcare centre. The project will also feature an auditorium, which will become the new home of the Bogota Philharmonic Orchestra.

“With this private initiative, Bogota will become the epicenter of the most innovative project in Latin America, bolstered by a significant investment of US$791 million, which will attract domestic and foreign visitors,” said Isabella Muñoz, executive director of Invest in Bogota, a corporation for the development and productivity of the Bogota region. “The city will also be able to host world-class sports and entertainment events, setting international standards in infrastructure, innovation and quality,”
