Fans attending FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will not be permitted to bring reusable water bottles into stadiums after FIFA introduced a late change to its venue code of conduct.
The governing body had previously allowed supporters to carry empty, transparent reusable plastic bottles into venues. However, an updated policy now prohibits all bottles, along with cups, jars and cans, citing safety concerns and the potential risk of objects being thrown.
FIFA said the decision was made to protect players, officials and spectators throughout the tournament.
“FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers and staff,” the organisation said. “FIFA made the decision to prohibit bottles to prevent risk and injury to players and attendees.”
The governing body added that many of the tournament venues already restrict outside bottles for safety reasons and that the policy is being applied consistently across all World Cup stadiums.
The move has prompted concerns among supporters, particularly given the high temperatures expected at several host venues during the tournament. Forecasts suggest some locations could experience temperatures between 26°C and 28°C, raising questions about hydration and access to drinking water on matchdays.
FIFA said a range of heat-mitigation measures will be available around stadiums, including misting stations, fans, hydration points and cooling tents.
“FIFA works closely with each host city committee and local authorities on heat mitigation factors for fans travelling to the stadium,” the organisation said.
The governing body also confirmed that water prices inside stadiums would remain in line with those charged during other events held at the venues.
The decision has drawn criticism from supporter groups. The Free Lions England fans’ group questioned the timing of the policy change, arguing that fan welfare should be prioritised alongside the measures being introduced to protect players from extreme heat.
The group said access to free water had been a key topic during discussions with FIFA and claimed supporters had previously been assured they would be able to bring reusable bottles into stadiums.
Supporters have also voiced concerns that the ban could increase costs for fans attending matches, while expressing hope that free water fountains inside venues will remain available throughout the tournament.
