Nebraska approves $600m overhaul of Memorial Stadium

University of Nebraska has given unanimous approval to a major redevelopment of Memorial Stadium, launching an ambitious project known as the “Big Red Rebuild”.

The redevelopment will combine large-scale demolition with new construction, with the most significant change focused on the South Stadium, which will be completely rebuilt. Extensive upgrades are also planned for both the west and east stands, reshaping much of the existing structure.

The project will introduce a range of modern features, including premium hospitality areas, VIP suites, enhanced lower-bowl seating, and upgraded concourses and facilities. A major portion of the investment, valued at more than $250 million, will go towards rebuilding the east side of the stadium. Plans also include a new open South Plaza and the creation of a continuous circulation route at the 100 and 200 levels to improve movement around the venue.

Capacity will be temporarily and permanently affected. While the stadium currently holds more than 90,000 spectators, seating will drop to around 65,000 during peak construction, particularly in the 2027 season. Once completed in 2028, capacity is expected to settle at approximately 80,000. Although this represents a reduction, university officials say it will be balanced by improved sightlines, upgraded amenities and stronger revenue potential through a more varied ticket offering.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $600 million. The university has stated that the redevelopment will be funded without public money or student tuition fees. Around $250 million is expected to come from private donations, with the remaining $350 million financed through bonds.

Beyond the stadium itself, the project is expected to deliver significant economic benefits. University projections suggest it could generate up to $1.1 billion in regional impact while increasing annual stadium revenues to roughly $95 million — a rise of about 40%.

Officials say the investment will preserve the historic character of the century-old venue while strengthening its role as a key financial driver for the university’s athletic programme
